You are missing the driver for the sound card. (Most common problem with Windows XP). Go to the web site of the PC manufacturer (or sound card manufacturer if you added it yourself) and look up you model under. Under the download or support section they will have the driver for free. Download and install it.

Assuming you have a Windows operating system installed on your computer it sounds like the drivers aren't installed for your audio device.
I apologize in advance if I use technical jargon a little too sophisticated for your understanding. I don't intend to project a condescending tone as I am only trying to help.
On to the solution:
If your audio device is integrated into your system board, also known as the motherboard then it shares resources with the chipset used on that particular motherboard. If you have a manufactured PC you may want to go to their website i.e. Dell.com and locate on their page a means for downloading the drivers for your PC. Look for "sound" or "audio" as keywords and have your model number and OS version handy.
If you have a custom-built computer built by either you, a tech savvy friend or any other arbitrary person then you will need to find out what kind of motherboard you have. You will need to either scrounge around your desk for a user's manual for the motherboard or pop the side off the computer and find the make and model of the motherboard and visit their site to search for the drivers keeping the previous instructions for the manufactured PC in mind.
Now, if you have a PCI or, dare I say, ISA sound card, then you will need to simply pop the side off your computer case and look for a make and model number, then replace the side and browse the internet for the appropriate drivers. You may also have a floppy disk or CD lying around with some drivers on it if you have a manufactured computer.
