Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Pierre Ambroise Francois Choderios de LaClos (1741-1803). He originally said it in French in his 1782 book Les Liasons Dangereuses: "La vengeance est un plat qui se mange froid,"

What it means is to give yourself some time to cool off before considering taking revenge on someone.

I'm not sure exactly where it comes from but it is said in one of my fav movies of all time, Kill Bill.
It means if you are going to get revenge, do it with a cold heart and it will be served up right.

The proverb "revenge is a dish best served cold" is credited to the 18th century novel les Liaisons dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons), written by the French official and army general Pierre Choderlos de Laclos (although it never actually appears in the original text).

Revenge is best served up cold. In other words, wait until everything has died down, and then get them back, if that's your intention.

It was, of course, referenced in the timeless 'Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan'. Mr. Khan followed it up with something along the lines of it being very cold in space. (Kirk - 'KHHAAANNNNN!')
