I know that CR is durable and has decent bending properties, but how difficult is it to carve, shape, or hollow the wood?

As a native Californian... I have worked with redwood often !! It's certainly wonderful (yet expensive) for decks and fences and outdoor furniture (I've built all of those)

However, carving it can be difficult because the wood between the rings is fairly soft, yet the rings themselves are rather tough !! This makes for an uneven cutting motion that takes alot of care and patience.

As a youngster I carved several duck decoys from redwood (we had tons of "scrap" 2x4's from our deck-project), and it was difficult. Since then I've also done a few bas-relief carvings and signs in redwood... I use a combination of carving-tools, Xacto-knifes, and dremel-tool grinding/sanding bits.

GOOD LUCK
