I am a single mother of three recently divorced and I am looking to relocate. I am trying to find out what areas are best for the three girls and I. I want a safe place, affordable, lots of culture, good schools and job opportunities.
we are currently located in Arizona but willing to relocate anywhere in the NE, Mid-Atlantic and SE.

Thanks,
A Fresh Start

I know you didn't mention the South West but San Antonio is VERY affordable. Many upon many folks are relocating to SA from all parts of the country. They sell their homes and relocate to SA, pay their house outright and bank the rest of the cash. If you stay on the northside of town you'll be among the best school districts in the city. You can get a brand new home from $140,000.00 (1300 sq ft) to a huge 3,000 square foot house for about $325,000.00 in a very nice area.

If you are fairly conservative and religious, Charlotte, NC is a nice cheap place that's recently seeing lots of development. However, if you don't fit into the definition, you're going to have some conflicts with the society there.

If you prefer somewhere with a nice economy, Atlanta, GA is worth a consideration. It's cost of living is generally low, and jobs are quite plentiful. Though, the cost of living is a bit higher than that of Charlotte.

I suggest that you look in the south and southeast, as the snow does tend to be quite startling to anyone who's not used to it. In a place that snows, you will usually be expected to drive to work even when it's up to 2in or more, and it's just generally a pain to deal with.

I moved from Las Vegas 6 years ago with my 3 grown daughters and grandson (no men involved!) to a small town outside of Nashville, TN. for just your reasons. We wanted a small town atmosphere that would be safe for the kids and with good schools, but also close enough to the city where we would have access to museums, the ballet and symphony, a nice zoo, loads of outdoor activities (many free), decent priced housing and pretty good job opportunities. We love it here, the kids (we added 2 more- now ages 11, 5 & 3) are thriving and we couldn't be happier! Good luck to you!
