And why are republicans symbolized by an elephant?
(If you ask me, I'd rather be the elephant, which I am, of course. But back to the question.)

The democratic party cares most about the needs of the middle class, hence the donkey, a hard-working animal.

I read many years ago that they tie a small rope around an elephants ankle when the elephant is a small baby and it can't break the rope to run away.As it grows It has remembered that it could not run away so even as a several ton adult they are still tied with a small rope and it thinks it cannot break the rope. True! So the elephant is used for the republican because an elephant never forgets and will use mud slinging tactics to get elected. A donkey is a very stubborn animal and if it decides it does not want to move it will sit down and it can take several people to make it move!

On January 15, 1870 a political cartoon appearing in Harper's Weekly titled "A Live Jackass Kicking a Dead Lion" by Thomas Nast, for the first time symbolized the Democratic Party as a donkey. Since then, the donkey has been widely used a symbol of the party, though unlike the Republican elephant, the donkey has never been officially adopted as the party's logo.

The elephant and donkey symbols were invented by Thomas Nast, a well known homosexual who was sentenced to 2 years in jail for that activity. That's something to be proud of all right.

Thomas Nast, the late nineteenth century cartoonist is credited with popularizing the application of these symbols to the two parties. Though it's possible that the symbols had been associated with the parties before his cartoons.

A donkey representing a hard-headed jackass for the democrats and and out of control raging elephant for the republicans. I think it still fits today.
