A friend gave me a Compaq Presario 5003US. He had some information on it and wanted me erase the hard drive, which I did with no problem. I tried to install Ubuntu and several Linux systems, but was unsuccessful. However, I was able to install Windows XP with no problem. Can any one tell me why Linux will not install??

Thanks,
Ed

G'day,

COMPAQ is owned by HP now, go to www.hp.com, in the search engine on the site, type in the model nummber, then look for the link for Free online Live Chat with an HP Tech for free, great free support

Linix is not the easiest to install do matter what the tech geeks tell you.

Here is a link for a successfull install: I run Ubuntu 6.06 on a Compaq Armada M700. It has a PIII 700MHZ, 192MB ram, and it runs it perfect

has a bit more than standard ram on your machine but do not think so.
Linux has at least 3 partitions when installed
You may have to set it up manually.
I would wipe your hard drive by an advanced install of xp.
Do a full format not the fast.
You may want to try to run Ubuntu live off that same disk to see if it works.
Perhaps older versions of ubuntu or there is something wrong with the install disc you have or downloaded.
did you do it with an iso image ?
Just out of interest after installing ubuntu at one point on a similar machine I discovered that no matter what the ubuntu somehow keeps itself alive.
I called up HP tech support asking how i could wipe out the hard drive. Think it was a Toshiba hard drive and there was no obvious utility to wipe out the hard drive available.
The tech started stammering "We only support msoft products " . No help. And I wanted to reinstall the copy of Windows it came with.
Here is a link to such a product

is it the live cd 6.6 or 6.10 version? or is it the 7.4 version. linux should have no problem running on this system Did you wait until it loaded from the cd rom, it takes a long time to check out the hardware, and may be you thought it was not loading,

you could go to Ubuntu.com and ask support there,

I have run Ubuntu 6.10 on a old Pentium 2 system from the live cd... with no problems.
