- communications between different parts of the earth
- broadcasting television and radio
- GPS (global positioning system) signals
- photography (visible and infrared) of the earth's surface for scientific purposes
- meteorological instruments for forecasting short-term and long-term weather (regionally and globally)
- military and security satellites using different wavelengths and instruments to watch enemy movements, military deployment, weapon facilities, etc.
- telescopes and other space-facing instruments to study the planets, stars, and intergalactic space
- the building (and eventual maintenance) of the ISS

This is mostly fantasy. The satellite information that is actually available to the public is either very low resolution (weather satellites) or dated images (Google Earth etc.) There aren't enough satellites and infrastructure to provide real-time imaging for the public, though it may be available to the CIA and the armed forces.

If satellites were used to spy on us, do you seriously think that technology would be accessable from our home computers. Of course not! It would be "CLASSIFIED". Civilians don't have access to live satellite imagery. You've been reading George Orwell's 1984 too many times.

Basically they are used for comunication system and navigation.Also mapping and weather paterns.Locating a person by infrared foot prints, satelite telescope , space station etc. The list of application is based on these subjects.
