Polygraphs (lie detectors) are really more of a tactic used my police to scare the average person into admitting something - the data collected using them is questionable, at best, and is really difficult to use in court.
The ability to control your breathing, heart rate and vocal responses are key in taking the test.
Breath slowly, do not panic, try your best to let your mind go blank during the process, and answer each question in a slow monotone voice.
That way, it will make the test hard to determine...guaranteed.

Actually, it's called a polygraph test. It measures your blood pressure, pulse, respiration an the electrical resistance of your skin to measure your level of anxiety. In theory, when you tell a lie, you become more anxious.
The answer is simple: If you can control your anxiety level, you can manipulate the results to be inconclusive and thus "beat" the "lie detector".

Polygraphs have been proven to be fantastically unreliable. Psychologists Iacono and Lykken have proven their accuracy to be merely sixty-one percent. Tell this to your interrogator, and see what he thinks.
Also, note that the polygraph is a stress test that uses a comparitive measure. In the beginning, your interrogator will ask you a series of questions to which the answer is indisputable: for example, is it true that your name is ..." When you anwser such questions, the interrogator will be able to see a normal stress baseline; that is, what your stress level is when you tell the truth. When the later answer questions untruthfully, your stress level should greatly increase above this baseline, thereby indicating to your interrogator that you have lied. Therefore, either become very used to lying and dullen your sympathetic reflex to the statement of lies, or make yourself think you are lying (or ponder stressful thoughts) when you tell the truth to throw off the baseline.

Go to http://antipolygraph.org. This is the best web site for explaining polygraph tests and how they work. Be advised that if it is a government administered test, the recommendation about clenching your butt cheeks and breathing slow will be detected by the motion detector that they have you sit on. Also, the guys who are administering the test are trained interrogators and are pretty accomplished at their art. I took the test and they told me I was inconclusive on one of the questions. I told them I was not inclined to retest.
