What is a good brand/size/speed/place to buy/price for an external hard drive for a graphic design major? I have a Powerbook G4 with 1.33 GHz. I would like to backup my hard drive once a night, but I'd also like to store older assignments and designs. Also to store and play my music collection.

You have a ton of options. The most important thing is probably the size. 500GB hard drives are on sale in a lot of places now because 750GB and 1TB hard drives are the next new thing. The next most important thing is the connection - firewire, usb, or ethernet. The ones with ethernet connections are usually more expensive, but with the Powerbook firewire should work for you. Try newegg.com or tigerdirect.com for the best prices. Some of them come with software that will allow you to set up a backup schedule too.

The technology on such devices has pretty much peaked, however, if I were in the market I would opt for nothing other than Seagate or Western Digital.

The latter has various sizes & models available, & it's track record for longevity & reliability has no equal.

I prefer the Western Digital "My Book" series. They use USB connections, so I can move the HD to any computer in the house if I need to, and the best thing about them is that they turn on and off with your computer. If you turn your computer off at night, the HD will turn off with it, and turn on with your computer when you power it up again.
They also take up very little space and can be positioned right next to each other if you have more than one (no fancy stands necessary). They are available up to 1TB.
