If you mean a K&N aftermarket intake kit, YES it will idle funny if not installed properly. This is due to the altering of the intake airflow characteristics that occurs with the installation of aftermarket "custom" intake systems. The PCM is calibrated and programmed from the factory to recognize a "set" airflow parameter. When this is altered, it CAN "confuse" the PCM, which messes up your short fuel trims, as well as your long fuel trims. This is what causes the unsmooth engine idle, as well as an INCREASE in fuel consumption and "check engine" lights on in some cases. It's better off to leave well enough alone.

A "K&N" FILTER ELEMENT WILL NOT affect the vehicles idle one bit.But if you plan on replacing the factory air intake with a "K&N" one then checkout with the dealer if what you are planning will affect your warranty or emission system

if it is a replacement filter for the stock air box there should be no difference in the idle.
