Were Romeo and Juliet real? I found this website, http://www.william-shakespeare.info/shakespeare-play-romeo-and-juliet.htm
It provides information about the history of the play, and states that Romeo and Juliet were real people, or at least based on real people, and they died in 1303. However, I used that information to answer a question here on Yahoo Answers and someone called it crap that I made up. I'm just wondering, is this website correct in saying that Romeo and Juliet were firmly based in reality? I'm just wondering, thanks.

Well, he based his story on the following poem:

So it could just be, and probably is true, that the story is based on true characters; but the plot is made up.

So there t'is. Hope that helps.

Just fiction. Shakespeare, nevertheless, based his plays on other writings in history, some from the Greeks and Romans. He was a genius wordsmith, yet Shakespeare's plots weren't very original.
