I just installed a Peterson universal trailer light kit on boat trailer this morning. I connected it to my truck & I discovered that everything works fine except the brake lights. The hazards work, turn signals, but when I press the brakes the light goes off instead of getting brighter. Any ideas?

It may just be a bad ground. Sometimes if the ball or trailer hitch dirty/rusty it do this. Try pulling it around with the truck and see if it not start working.
If, the wires are correct. Blinkers are the Brakes too. So, if the blinkers are working the brake lights should work also.
If, you have to, you can connect a wire to ground on the truck and one to ground on the trailer. Most plugs have the wire (White) it just never connected as the trailer should ground on the ball.

With some of the lights working you have to have some kinda ground. But as stated in other answer most problems are related to ground. There should be a white wire on the trailer connector sometimes used and other times they depend upon mechanical connection of trailer on ball. Ensure a good ground by running the white to a bolt on the trailer
Depending on your vehicle you may have to buy a convertor for your hook up. If your vehicle has Amber lights in the tailight assembly then your gonna need a conversion adapter

If you have all the wires connected correctly, it is probably the ground. Sometimes it takes a trip around the block for the trailer ball to make the ground connection well enough. It also could be a crossed wire or one where the universal kit does not quite match your vehicle.

im willing to bet you have a tilt trailer , what you need to do is sand down a round spot and drill 2 holes 1 on each half of the trailer run a jumper wire for the ground
connecting the two halves of the trailer. its a common problem when u have a painted tilt trailer.

if the blinkers work, the trailer lights are fine. the problem is with your truck.
