I have a 2003 Saab 9-3 SE. I am interested in changing it from an automatic to a manual transmission but I have a couple questions. First of all, could I do it for relatively inexpensive? I have seen other answers for other cars and I saw that if you get all the stuff for a manual tranny from a junkyard you can get it all installed and everything for under $1000. Is this likely to mess up my car?? Is there a way the person could install it wrong and it would ruin my car? I don't know much about cars at all so the more information that you can give me the better!! Thank you for your help!!

First off, finding the parts would be difficult. You'd have to change the flywheel, transmission, drive shaft and possibly the bell housing plus find all the parts for the clutch- pressure plate, friction disc, throughout bearing and linkage. Also, the differential for an automatic has a higher gear ratio than that for a manual resulting in a reduction in power. I'd advise you to look around for a car with a manual instead of going through the headache and expense of conversion.

First of all the automatic has different wiring harneses. Next the pedals. Manual has a clutch master cyl and a slave inside the bell housing. And the final drive ratio is different so your engine compter will think there is a problem. ABS brake light will stay on untill you find a computer program that fixes those problems. So why not trade in the 5 year old SAAB car for something newer?

i be glad to say that some people are wrong, why? final ratio on auto trans are high than the manual meaning auto trans have more torque on final gear but slow high speed vs manual trans
manual trans will required less mantenience because the oil change(you will never ever have to change manual trans oil) and one clutch well used will last 10 yrs
auto trans with the time will need major repair, clutches wear out, converter need to be change and thats will cost a lot vs the manual will never need repair if you drive it correctly
when you swap for auto to manual you will need flywheel, clutch pumps with lines, the third pedal and the linkage
is an easy work to do not a mission like others says and it wont damage the feeling of the car and manual trans are fasters that auto

You would be better off trading your car in for a model that already has a manual transmission.

I don't mean to be negative, but wouldn't it just be easier to just get a manual with your next car, and just use what you have? I've driven both types, and they both have advantages. Manuals are nice when you're driving for fun. Automatics are great for everyday driving. Switching them sounds like it wouldn't be worth it.
