you should cut back on caffeine but you don't have to completely cut it out. some studies show that caffiene can cause erratic heartbeats and possibly lower birth rate if consumed in large amounts. one cup of coffee or coke a day is not too much.

Because caffeine is a stimulant that can interfere with the baby's development. Of course you would really have to over indulge to see effects. I remember reading one of the baby websites who talked about the results of caffeine exposure in pregnant rats or mice, they were given 300 mg a day before defects were seen. In human terms, that's a heck of a lot of caffeine.

I cut back only because it made my other pregnancy symptoms worse. However I couldn't completely remove it from my diet as I am addicted to it and get withdrawal headaches if I don't at least have my one Tim Horton's double double every day! Baby does get more active now when I have more than 2 cups of coffee in a couple hours. However sugar sets him off more than the caffeine does! Moderation is the key I believe.

Also the way I look at is there are far worse things I could be putting in my body than a bit of coffee every day.

You can have caffiene, but you are supposed to limit it to two or so sodas or cups of coffee a day, some say even more is just fine. Others say absolutely none, but that's a bit extreme. Caffiene is a stimulant, and can keep babies awake, if the mother has had enough. I drink at least two sodas or coffees a day, and have throughout pregnancy and nursing my daughter, and she's never shown any effects. So that's why I think absolutely cutting it out is a bit extreme, and not what every person has to do.

Do you know how they conducted their tests to conclude caffeine can have birth defects?

They gave 24 cups of coffee worth to lab rats everyday to determine there could be ill effects.

Think about the size of a rat in comparison to a human being! I highly doubt a human being drinks that much caffeine plus to make up for the difference in size, that would be easily over 200 cups of coffee worth.

You can have caffeine while you are pregnant.

Caffeine is a stimulant found in colas, coffee, tea, chocolate, cocoa, and some over-the-counter and prescription drugs. Large quantities of caffeine can cause irritability, nervousness and insomnia as well as low birth-weight babies. Caffeine is also a diuretic and can rob your body of valuable water.

Some studies show that drinking caffeine during pregnancy can harm the fetus. Other research suggests that small amounts of caffeine are safe. Talk to your doctor before drinking caffeine during pregnancy. Caffeine is an ingredient in many over-the-counter and prescription drugs. Talk with your doctor before taking any drugs or medicines while pregnant.

You CAN have caffeine when you are pregnant. You just don't want to go over board with it. Everything in moderation. Go to babycenter.com, and look it up.

it speeds up the baby's resting heart rate and at this stage it is too fragile to be pushing it like that. it is too busy developing still
