Technically you shouldn't have an increment of ram that is "248" because the sizes don't come in that fashion.
But more than likely if you don't meet the ram requirements then you will Blue Screen and your system will dump all it's memory and restart until you quit trying.
I suggest a memory upgrade, it is 2007 ya know.

If it a program many times it will run, but, may be a little slow. The computer will use Virtual Memory to compensate.
If it hardware, I not sure, it may or may not work.
Some programs need a certain amount of memory to install. If, there a problem, many times it just freeze up during the install. And, you know it not going to work.

Most likely your computer will get tired and try to get rid of everything on it's system. you will see the BSOD (blue screen of death) don't get scared if you see it saying its dumping physical memory, because that just Windows trying to protect itsself
