I asked this question under civil participation too, but i'm not getting very many answers. I figure someone else under pregnancy/parenting might have gone through this situation.
I am from Michigan and I got a letter to call in for Jury Duty. I'm not sure what to do in my situation though. I'm breastfeeding my 9 month old son and plan on it until he's at least a year old. He will only drink from my breasts..i've tried bottles and cups but he just wants his milk straight from me. Will I still have to go in for Jury Selection, I Hear that can take all day just for that. Do I call or write a letter to explain my situation?I'm also worried that going to jury selection that my breasts will get engorged/painful and my baby will not be very happy.

I had hoped that someone had already answered your question. I am not from Michigan, I am not a woman, I am not a Lawyer, and I am not a Doctor, so here goes nothing. Try contacting the court that sent you the subpoena for jury duty and explain your situation. Tell them you will be happy to serve when you ween your baby.

Ok maybe I am daft but I can't figure out if this bill passed?
2004 Senate Bill 1459 (Exempt nursing mothers from jury duty )

"Educating about breastfeeding isn't that hard. For example, a judge in Michigan contacted a local Leader requesting information on how long to excuse a breastfeeding mother from jury duty. The Area Professional Liaison (APL) responded to the request by providing information from the Innocenti Declaration recommending breastfeeding until age two or beyond, the effects of sudden weaning and the need for a mother to express her milk if separated, as well as information on mother/baby separation. She provided him with copies of LLLI's Statement from the UNCED Conference (1990), the LLLI Legal Packet on Jury Duty, and "Excerpts from Literature Dealing with Mother/Baby Separation". If the court or judge is not familiar with why breastfeeding is important, the mother could use "Breastfeeding Does Make a Difference" (No. 64) and "Facts About Breastfeeding 1994 (No. 545g)."

whatever you do, don't ignore the survey. by state law, that has to be filled out and sent back within 10 days of you receiving it. go to your circuit court's website and see if they have any FAQs or contact information.

according to the information in the FAQ for my county's circuit court:
I stay at home to care for my child. Do I have to serve jury duty?
You may request a "Application For Relief From Jury Duty". You may also pick up the form at the Circuit Court Clerk's Office. The Trial Court Administrator makes the decision if you have a valid reason for exemption.

I'm in IL and when we get our letter, we can send a form or letter back before the call date. I have been either pg or nursing for almost 10 years now, and I have been called and I just wrote them saying I was a SAHM nursing mother with no childcare and that I would be happy to serve in the future. In IL if you do not serve when called you get put on like a "short list" and get called again sooner than usual.
I would say, write or call, and also contact your local La Leche League; the leader may know more about MI law.
Good luck, mama - stand up for yourself and your baby!

There are reasons on the back of the Summons that you can use to be excused but I don't think your situation is one of them. Write to them, I'm sure they will understand and I'msure this is not the first time they've had this excuse from someone. What ever you decide, don't wait till the last minute, they might think you are just trying to get out of jury duty.

once you're a registered voter, in some unspecified time interior the destiny you would be reported as yet that doesn't advise you will serve. 1000's of persons would be reported as each and each week yet no longer all would be chosen for somewhat some motives. And while people say to lie and act like some racist jerk, that may not inevitably paintings to get you out. the two facets are finding for malable people, people they are able to sway one way or the different. so which you will desire to flow in good on your convictions, somebody unwavering in what they think. And clever, they do unlike clever people. So the smarter you come off the extra probable you would be excused.

Go to City hall and decline the offer to be in Jury duty, if that doesn't work try ignoring and not laughing at the short film they show. Also don't smile and give no eye contact. Make sure to sit on the end so the officers won't think you would be a good community Jury.

You can call and let them know, ask them about it, or write a letter of explanation of your circumstances. That I do believe, would be a valid reason to not have to do jury duty, however, you need to do this soon, so you can be dismissed from it. I wish you the best. Take care.

I got out of jury duty because I was nursing. On the slip there is a section that says excusal due to taking care of someone. I marked that and sent it back in.

I'm not sure what state you are in , but where I live , you can be excused from jury duty if you are a caretaker for an infant or senior citizen , all you need is a letter from a dr. stating this.
