The "Mobile Army Medical Hospital" is separated by * because when they used the initials in caps to write reports etc, it was easier to just hold the 'caps lock' key on the type writer to keep the letter separate.

The Movie/Series was about a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital-the Asterisks are there to define the Acronym,they aren't markers for missing letters.

They were used to separate the letters because they looked better then conventional dots/periods.
