you can debate who is the best pitcher or best hitter, but in terms of best player....its unquestionably Babe Ruth. Not only is he arguably the greatest hitter of all time, but he was also one of the best pitchers in the league during his time. In 1916 he led the league in ERA (1. 75), shutouts (9) and was third in wins (24) and K's (170). The next year he led the league in complet games (35), 7th in ERA (2.02) 5th in K's, (128) and 2nd in wins (24). Even if he had never picked up a bat, he would probably still be in the hall of fame as a pitcher.
There really is no one who can compare to him.

Barry bonds. Hes simply amazing. Lets see babe ruth face 98 mph fastballs the legendary fastball of his time topped off at 91 mph (Walter Johnson) which today is about average. The guy didnt even see a slider until late in his career. He pitched in the deadball era and hit in the homerun era. Here are bond's achievements and the ones he will have:
3000+ hits
2600 walks (he already is #1 in this stat)
10000+ At bats
1st all time in HR
3000 games
over 600 doubles
2000 RBIs (keep in mind he has spent most of his time on the offensively poor giants)
73 HR in a season
Record for most MVP awards with 7
Most consecutive seasons with 30 HR with 13 in a row
8 Gold gloves
Is the only member in the 500-500 club, actually hes the only member in the 400-400 club too (HR-SB)
Will be in the 3000 hits 500 HR club
Is 5th in all time slugging, 3rd in all time OBP and will probably be 3rd in RBIs

I would have to give this to the "Say Hey Kid" Willie Mays. The man can do everything. He made incredible defensive plays and won numerous gold gloves (12) because of it. The man was a hitting machine with 660 career homers and over 3000 hits to show. The guy was fast, he led the majors in triples twice and stolen bases 3 times. Throw in 2 MVPs this man had an incredible career and was a joy to watch.

Oh my god I can feel the flames now, ITS IS BARRY BONDS! Hall of famer without the juice, baseball GOD shooting up. No other player has won more than 3 MVP's and Bonds has 7! He walks so much you think he would have lost some of that weight by now. Obviously I am a Giants fan so if I was not being biased, prolly Babe, not only was he the HR king but a 20 game winner as a pitcher! Lets see Johan Santana do that!

As for pitchers I would have to say... Roger Clemens, and for all around players definatley Jackie Robinson. He was really fast, could hit (decently) and was a good fielder! But definatley not Barry Bonds, Mr. Steriods!

Barry Bonds is the greatest. Ruth is close behind at #2. You could argue for eternity on the rest.
