Well, that mainly depends on what type of metal you're wanting to listen to, as there are like a jillion different types.
I'd suggest listening to the original heavy metal bands, such as Led Zeppelin ( my absolute favorite of ALL TIME) or Black Sabbath, as they are both documented as the founders of heavy metal.
But like I said, there's about a jillion different types of heavy metal, so I suggest just experimenting with different types, genres, and bands.

Depends if your lookin for Death, Power or Black Metal.
Death: Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal, Nile, Vital Remains
Power: Blind Guardian, Lunaris, Hammerfall
Black: Emperor, Dissection, Mayhem
those are just a few, there are so many more sub-genres I would start with death metal. Again, it depends, you may be looking for cheesy MTV Metal like slipknot.

with so many different genres out there today its a tough call.but if u really want to hear a killer"heavy metal"(i call them rock and ****** roll) then check out motorhead.led zeppelin black sabbath iron butterfly hawkwind are also killer bands.
