One of the lessons I wish I'd learned earlier is that that graduation is really for the families of the graduates, not for the graduates themselves. Therefore, you should wear what would make those members of your family who attend feel most proud of you. I'm assuming you don't wear caps and gowns for graduation at your school? Then what you wear will depend upon the kind of area you live in. If you are in an area in which people go to church, think of this as being like that - most people dress in their best clothes for church, and those would be the kinds of things you would wear for graduation. If dressing up in your community means something else, you can wear that. I've never seen anyone wear jeans (those would tend to appeal to you and your friends, not your family); usually it is dresses or skirts and blouses. There usually isn't a particular color, although since graduations take place in Spring or early summer, people tend to wear clothing appropriate for that season (i.e., not much black!).
Oh, and if you do wear caps and gowns, please, please, wear something underneath! I once went to a high school graduation in a low-income neighborhood in which they were given the gowns before graduation and, since their parents had mostly never graduated, they thought you wore the gown like a dress. The girls had nothing but underwear on underneath. At the end of the ceremony, they were told they had to return the gowns before leaving the auditorium, and there was a panic among all the girls who didn't want to take off their clothes and walk out in just their bras and panties!

I just graduated from college in NC and at my graduation rehearsal we were given the dress rules. The person graduating is supposed to dress appropriately, just like if they were going to church or out somewhere special. Girls normally wear a dress or blouse and skirt, jeans is a definate no-no. They also informed us that wearing flip flops was a big no-no. As for the color, if your gown is going to cover what you are wearing then it doesn't matter, but if it doesn't cover up your clothes underneath then probably white or the color of the gown. You are to dress appropriately because you are representing your school. :)

I'd say go for a pretty sun dress. I went to my sister's eight grade graduation last year, and almost 3/4 of the girls were wearing dresses in bright, summery colors (pinks, blues, yellows, flower prints, etc). I'd say avoid wearing jeans, but if you don't feel like wearing a dress, then go for dark pants and a nice, dressy shirt.
