You cannot play a DVD on the Wii.

It has been rumored however that Nintendo will release a Wii which supports DVDs.

I mus say however, that nearly everyone owns a DVD player these days, so I think it unnecessary for the Wii to have DVD playback, as it would probably increase the price.
