The market needs volatility to function. Even in a sideways moving market there are always stocks that are moving up and stocks that are moving down. That's why a sideways moving market is sometimes called a stock picker's market.
The easiest way to establish the overall market direction is to check if the market is making higher highs and higher lows (uptrend) or lower highs and lower lows (downtrend).
