If you are just limiting it to Corvette vs Mustang then it is the Corvette hands down. Ford has never built a Mustang that could beat the Corvette in performance. I'm a Mustang person and have owned 4 of them. Mustangs are fast in their own right. I've had one up to 140 MPH on the freeway, but can't beat the Corvette. The Mustang SVT cobra R is very fast but the Corvette just edges it out.

The Mustang is a lot better than a Corvette. The Mustang has kept it's pony car muscular appearance. The Corvette has slacked and they are starting to look like stupid little sports cars. So, hands down, the Ford Mustang is a ton better than the Corvette.

Is this a joke? Chevy Corvette Here are performance comparisons: Mustang GT 300HP 0-60mph in 5.3 seconds. Top Speed is 146mph. Corvette 400HP 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds. Top Speed is 186mph. ---------------------------- Mustang GT500 Shelby with 500HP 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds. Top Speed is limited to 155mph. Real top speed is close to 180mph. Corvette Z06 with 500HP. 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds. Top Speed is 198mph. And then there is the Corvette ZR1 with over 600HP. 0-60mph in 3.6 seconds. Top Speed is over 200mph. So all versions of Corvette's are much faster than all versions of Mustangs. The Corvette is a Supercar. It competes with the Ford GT supercar. The Mustang is a Muscle car. It competes with the Chevy Camaro.

The Ford Mustang. Hands down. The Chevrolet Corvette has become more of a tuner car through the years. Overall, the Mustang has sustained the favorite of many households as the "American" muscle car.

I like this question, but as Dodge is now American again,,what about the Viper?? If you are talking Muscle it would have to be between the Viper and the Vette. My vote..Viper..If I am getting a car like you propose, I want it to be so rare to see it, that I am noticed..Sorry but I do think these cars are "Look at Me" cars..No, I do not own either. If I go with that premise..too many Mustangs,,but more people can afford them, and not the Z06 or Viper. I owned the 1971 SS 454 Chevelle and Vette, but the new cars have it over the old in EVERY aspect.

between just those two i would have to go with the ford although i am a chevy man. my reason for choosing the ford is that you asked which one is the real "american muscle". most vette guys have the cash to go out and buy a fast car without having to work it. the working man can go out and buy a reasonably priced mustang and build some serious power from it. i think muscle cars are a personal expression which you really don't see in the vettes.

i heard this once and i think this is what you mean...
ford=american muscle
chevy=performance/sport
back in the day like 85 and older both the mustang and vette were great true "muscle cars" now days there is nothing muscles about them, who likes to drive plastic...its great to buy a 65000 car with 500+ HP but thats not muscle...any engine 350/351 or bigger that you yourself have modified is MUSCLE...

The Corvette was the first high performance/sports car and the Mustang was one of the first pony/muscle car, (the GTO was the first true muscle car). I'd take eather car.
