Politics has nothing to do with logic. Doctors, teachers, musicians, artists are all devoid of logic when it comes to their work.
One of the most intelligent President's ever was President Nixon. Perhaps you are confusing "intelligence" with "wisdom"? Or, perhaps, with politcal savvy?
Americans (or any other people) ARE easily fooled, because people are too lazy to use THEIR intelligence or to read or study history.
