Don't assume anything when you're dealing with electricity. Did you carefully read the installation instructions before you started? Since you are not sure of what you are doing, call a qualified electrician to complete the installation. This is dangerous stuff you are messing around with here. If you complete the installation yourself and a fire resulting from improper installation damages or destroys your home, then the insurance company may not pay off on the claim. Also, some cities require licenses and the demonstration, through testing, of a minimum level of competency when dealing with electrical installation issues. If you install it yourself, or accept the advice of someone on-line, you could be in serious trouble with your city should a fire result. For your own peace of mind and safety, get a qualified, certified, and insured electrician to complete the work for you, even if you have to shell out a few bucks to do it. Make sure to keep records of any of this sort of work you have done . These sorts of things are best stored in a safe deposit box for safekeeping. Then, if something happens, you will have covered yourself. In the end you'll be glad you did.

Fans usually come with better wiring instructions than you may get otherwise, but here's what I know... if it will help you sort it out.

From where I come from, there should be a solid black wire (hot) that would go to the black lead on the fan, a solid white wire going to the white (neutral) lead on the fan, and a bare copper wire going to the green lead (ground) on the fan.

If you have two wall switches going to the fan's ceiling mount location, one would operate the fan itself... and the wires from the other switch would be for the light kit... if installed.

Hopefully, you have turned off the breaker providing power to the fan's location before proceeding.

Hope this helps!
