I presently live in Cleveland OH. But am considering a move out west. I don't want to live in California because the cost of living is outrageous, among other things. I don't want to live deep in the Mojave Desert, where the daytime highs are 110F.
Las Vegas is a great place to visit, but I'm sure it's loaded with rif raf. Reno "statistically speaking" seems like a good place. It's a 24 hour city, located in a beautiful part of the state. It does get cold in the Winter, but I'm used to it. The cost of living is moderate. The population is around 200,000 which means that it's not overcrowded like Las Vegas, and CA cities are. The crime rate is low, employment rate is high, and it's not far from many beautiful places, like the Pacific Coast, Sierra Nevada Mts, and Lake Tahoe. I'd like to hear from some folks who live in Reno to tell me how you like it, or don't like it, and why.

Don;

What more could I add? Just remember that Reno is still considered as being a "high desert" area so it does get into the 100's in the summer. Also consider neighboring cities of Stead, and Sparks if you plan to buy a home. There's a lot of new construction going on there. Yes it snows in the winter, but more often as not it's all melted off by the afternoon.

One "iffy" thing is the road construction on I-80 & the "train trench" can make the morning commute a little hectic, but we all live with it. I think you'll like it here, Welcome.

I am a Reno native who moved back from Los Angeles area to Reno about 15 years ago. You have a good general idea about Reno already. Reno's motto "The biggest little city In the world" is still applicable. There has been a lot of growth in the last 5 years. Our real estate prices have gone up as they have nation wide but also because a lot of Californians have jumped ship and come to Reno where they sell their CA home and get one for a lot less and start a business or buy stuff. However there are still resonable homes around in the surounding valleys a few miles away and there is a hotel condo conversion trend going on in town but a lot smaller than what was going on in Vegas. Reno has been picked as one of the 10 best location to start a business and a big factor is that there is no state tax but personally it is made up for mostly by other taxes such as our gas tax. we get all for seasons since our evevation is about 4,3000 ft.

I really like the smaller town feel that is in the Reno area. You can take a 2 or 3 hr drive to Sacramento or San Francisco if you want from here. There are not the outright gettho type neighborhoods that bigger cities have and after living in L.A I laugh whenever the local news mentions any "gang activity" going on- It is hardly existant. One of the things Reno and Sparks (the two cities are almost one) do is they have year-round events such as rib cookoofs, air races, Street Vibrations (bikers venue), Hot August Nights (classic car and nostalgia event-the biggest event of all) hot air ballon show, and the Sparks Farmers Market, downtown events and river rafting competitions ( the Truckee river flows through Reno) and other things. You usually have a short commute to work and there are just two freeways that go through town; the 80 east to west and the 395 north and south with the usual peak rush hour traffic on the roads in the am and pm. You can golf, hunt, fish, hike, camp, ride a trail bike, boat, ski and a lot more all within 45 miles of Reno.

Best thing to do if you narrow a choice down is to try to take a short visit to the area and drive around in a rental car if you fly in.

If you want 24 hour Nevada towns, also give Carson City and South Lake Tahoe a shot. Much smaller and more family oriented and close to Reno- 30 minutes and 60 minutes respectively. I lived in both for many years as well as 9 yrs. in Las Vegas (which you're SO right about). Northern Nevada is a great choice- although I now live near Nashville TN, which I love more than any of them! Good luck with your move!

Im born and raised here in Reno and LOVE IT. Ive lived in neighboring Truckee, Seattle Wa and Detroit Mi. Reno takes the cake.. you pretty much answered yourself though.. and as far as traffic goes.. it is not bad at all.. if the freeway is busy there are always others ways to get to your destination. We have a street that basically circles the city. and the city is on a grid so you cant get lost ..i personally think the housing is high. but thats me.
