i just made two solutions 1. salt dissolved in water 2. sugar dissolved in water. i put them in seperate jars with a washer inside the jar with a string holding it. Now What do i wait for? Also i put food coloring in one of them, will that ruin the rock candy. Where should i put the two solutions? How long do i have to wait?

If the jar is open to atmosphere the water will evaporate, the solution will become more and more saturated and rock salt or rock candy will form. How long this will take is a function of how hot the solution was in the first place, how large the jar is, the shape of the jar, and the room temperature.

For best results (largest rocks) allow the solution(s) to cool slowly. Do not disrupt them while cooling.

If the dye you used for coloring was water soluble it should remain in the water and will not color the rocks.

Good luck with your experiment.

Make sure they are in a dry place to encourage faster evaporation of solution. If the washer is clean it should be OK. It gives the crystals a surface on which to form.
