Today, my 12 year old daughter and I were rambling through some woods when we found a badly constructed rope swing, by that I mean the rope was tied to the trunk, not an overhanging branch.

Naturally, I proceeded to wang myself around on the end of it. Much to her amusement. My daughter was less confident, so, I told her she was a chicken until she did it.

Not understanding the dynamics of rotational inertia, she went for a straight swing and, reaching a peak of exitement, swung back straight into the trunk causing a big swollen shoulder, massive lump on head, nausea, dizzyness and temporary loss of vision.

She got all the necassary treatments, and she's good now.

Whatt do you reckon??

Should I turn myself in??

Hey these things happen it's all part of lifes experience, she will know how to do it next time or won't touch a rope again in her life! My daughter was about 2 years old and running around the stable yard with a bit of string they use to tie bales together around her ankle. Being concerned she would fall I shouted 'stop' then, and this is really embarassing, I stamped my foot on the string!! She went flat on her face!! I knew the second my foot landed I shouldn't have done it. She was fine, a bit shocked but fine and now 25 years later she still remember it!
I would trust you with my daughters when they were small but I'm not sure now, they're real beauties!

LMAO, sorry dude I remember a story of my young cousin who thought he knew how to handle a rope swing and ran down with the swing and he reached the apex at straight on speed he was flipped through 360 degrees about 3 times and landed in a heap on the floor. After the panic of injuries had passed and he was absolutely fine. I could not hold back the laughter any more to the point tears ran down my cheeks in bucket loads.

Soz for the above this just brought memories flooding back..

She has learnt an important life lesson by your hands which is a bit hard but as you can see from the above who am i to say others wise. but if you asked me now to look after my child for a bit I would say fat chance soz dude.

As for turning yourself in I would ask your little one what to do on that Question

You got her treatement. That is a sign you are not abusive. Most abusive parents don't get treatement for thier kids. As a parent myself I realize I am not perfect, but I do not try to initimidate my children to do things. I feel they have enough peer pressure at school. I want my children to learn it is ok not to follow what others say. They need to learn to make decisions that are good for them in the heat of the moment. I would use this situation to teach her about how silly it is to do something just because someone else taunted her into do it... like drugs.. sex.. and the rest of the wonderfully stupid things that tweens and teens will try to talk her into doing.
Good Luck,
Three

There's no such thing as the perfect parent, but there is a thing called common sense. It might be better if you thought first, before acting. I Totally understand you were having fun and just being dad, but as I said a little bit of thought may be easier another time.

You were wrong to tell her she was a chicken until she did it.

You are her parent. You are supposed to be guiding her gently and supporting her to make her own decisions in life - good or bad - and be sensitive and caring.

She had already decided that it was dangerous. She only did it because you goaded her. It sounds like she is a sensible gal and you are a total pratt. Next time, listen to your daughter and support her views with love and understanding.

Learn by your mistakes and don't put her life in danger ever again. Treat her like the princess she is. And be a father not a buddy. If you want to dumb with your life , do it without her around.
12 is a very impressionable age, be cautious.

Don't turn yourself in. I'm sure you were just having fun, plus it was a total accident. Just make sure to take care of her and learn from the situation. Don't dwell on the past just live in the now. Good Luck!

Yes I would, I did all that sort of things at that age and had great fun .It was an accident so don't blame yourself these things happen.Maybe take her again and get her to practise slowly for starters.Much better than being cooped up inside playing TV games.

Though admittedly a poor parenting choice, especially the part where you goaded your kid into swinging, it's not illegal. You made a mistake, you didn't intentionally harm her. Plus, I bet she doesn't do anything you dare her to again. I'm glad you had the foresight to get her the proper medical treatment, people who intentionally harm children don't do that. Don't beat yourself up about it, and help your daighter recuperate.

I think you sound like a great dad and you will enrich her life - don't beat yourself up with guilt - you weren't to know that would happen!!!
And she chose to let you goad her - she probably wanted to do it anyway and was a bit scared - you were just encouraging new fun experiences really - all kids have accudents - that is life and growing up!"
