Put five hot ants in your left sock.
And try to keep your back straight.

Learn the foundations of bellydancing by signing up for a class. This will teach you important skills such as muscle isolation and dexterity. Bellydancing classes can also be very fun!
You should also take hip-hop dancing classes. Shakira incorporates many non-traditional moves into her dancing and adds many modern elements.
Get fit! Bellydancing can be a great way to get fit, but before you attempt to dance like Shakira, you should be in relatively good shape. Your abs should be your main focus, but do not forget your legs, hips, and arms.
Watch the video 'Hips Don't Lie' very closely. After watching it a couple of times, attempt to follow along. Slow down and pause the video as necessary.
Write down what the steps are so you can become familiar with the choreography.
Watch yourself in the mirror.
Realize that you will probably not be able to dance exactly like Shakira.
Don't give up!
Make sure there is a lot of extra space.
The most important thing to remember is to keep whatever body part your moving isolated. Isolation is key to making it look as good as Shakira. If your moving your hips try to keep your chest and arms still and vice versa, it makes your movements look more controlled.

well, to try and teach yourself will be very difficult as Shakira knows the right way to do it without hurting your back and muscles... thats why it would be better to maybe buy a dvd of bellydancing (go to www.shira.net for a great resource and links) I've been bellydancing for 6 years now... let me tell you we all wish we could dance like shakira, but she's been doing it since she was 5 or something... so her body has grown and matured being used to that type of stretching and strength. as one person said... yoga or anything that works your core muscles will help those ab muscles to move when you want them to (something I'm still working on...hee hee). Shakira makes it look easy, but it certainly aint!

But look on the web and see what links you can find, it's out there so I'm sure you'll find it if you try.

I think people have offered a lot of good suggestions already but belly dancing is a great way to get started, then adding yoga for flexibility. I would also suggest watching her video and trying to imitate her. That will help you see where you need to improve. Practice will make perfect-good luck!

Shakira is all about flexability... I would say start learning basic bellydancing and do some excercises for flexability. I don't think there is one way you can perfectly emulate her but theres a start.
