What is your goal in attending graduate school? If it is just further information and enlightenment, go for whichever one most appeals to you (and if you can't decide, it doesn't much matter which one you choose). If you are hoping for a job at the end of graduate school, my guess would be that English would give you more options. Someone with advanced philosophical training can't do much other than to become a philosophy professor, and there aren't too many openings for these. Someone with advanced English training can go into areas like editing and grant-writing - anything in which strong written communications are needed, along with the teaching possibilities, which in English exist not only in universities, but in middle and high schools as well (and don't forget the ESL possibilities, if you are interested in going overseas, which would be limited for Philosophy majors).

Philosophy

I would recommend Philosophy on two grounds. First, Philosophy is a foundational discipline, it underlies all other studies in the humanities just as mathematics does in the natural sciences. Second, English as a discipline is, in many institutions, in the throes of an identify crisis. It is not sure if it wants to be the traditional study of literature, or instead be critical studies, or cultural studies or something else.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I would have to agree that majoring in English will give you a better chance at a job. The options for a philosophy major are fairly small.

I wouldn't choose based on which one you would find a job in, instead I would say choose the one that you love. Sure it will be prbly easier to find a job in English, but do you LOVE IT? is it your passion? If so then I would say major in English.

I made that mistake years ago, of only choosing something that would get me a job and make more $ and I regret it. Great thing tho, is that I am able to correct it.

Whatever decision you make, good luck!!
