I'm relitively new to the insides of computers, but I'm learning by trial and error. Unfourtunately I have made an error, and it turns out my new computer (a1720n) only has 250 watts avalible. I want to install new graphics card that requires a minimum of 450 watts, is there an adapter of some kind I can get? Or do i have to get a new PSU altogether?

Only alternative would be to buy a new PC.

The power supply unit (PSU) has a +3.3V, +5V and +12V rails. The new video cards draw power mostly from the +12V rail. There is no way a 250W PSU w/ weak (12 amps or less) could supply the power requirement of new and powerful cards.

Be sure to get a 450 watt or higher PSU that has STRONG +12V rail, preferably dual rails. Perhaps something like this:

Do not just rely on minimum PSU recommendation. You might just run it HOT at FULL LOAD (esp. the +12V rail) and you would have little or no room for expansion. A bigger PSU runs cooler and lasts longer.

how many things are you running on your computer? i mean are you running the basic ? like a cd rom , floppy, and your hard drive? well that is all then try playing your game and see if you have any problems. i am playing ghost recon advance warfighter and it said i had to have power source of at least 350 watts. but i am only putting out let 250 or 300 watts. try it you might be polaying your sooner then you think.
