What does the saying "no strings attached" mean?

It meant without conditions, obligations or without a catch.

The way we use this phrase has kind of changed from it's orginal meaning.

When cloth merchants make high quality fabric, like silk they examine it for any flaws. When they find flaws they mark it with a small piece of string. The flawed fabric is still usable in many cases. But when someone needs the highest quality, without any flaws then they ask for fabric with 'no strings attached.'
