This question also has to do with stop signs and stop lights. Do we need to visually connect with others to fufill some curiousity? I always look around and to see others, almost evey car that passes by or at a stop.

I do it sometimes because it is a non committal, limited time frame, curiosity. It's like watching TV...people watching...people look at people.

It is always good to be aware of our surroundings. We have heard too many horror stories to not do so! It's become so ingrained in us that we have forgotten why we do it... but we sometimes check that all of our doors are locked and that no one will take the opportunity of jumping in just because the car is immobilized for a minute or two... It's become sort of second nature for most to just make sure everything is "cool' and "copacetic" around us!

It can be called hypervigilance where the person is super sensitive to their surroundings.

A milder form is curiosity that can be described as a need to determine who in the environment is a threat. A more severe form is fear and panic.

OMG, it's YOU!

I freak out when I stop at a light or I'm driving down the highway and suddenly realize someone is staring.

How is it that I know? Is it some kind of ESP?
