Embalming is necessary for sanitation and disinfection purposes if the body is to be viewed. Embalming does not prevent decomposition, it simply stalls it. You could conceivably view a body for years, depending on how well they were embalmed and how well their body responded to the embalming. But there is no way to tell how long someone will last.

Well, I've viewed a lot of corpses in my life and I'm still not embalmed. So I'm guessing the number is kinda high.

You can view a corpse that hasn't been embalmed as long as you like. It gets kind of gross after three or four days when the skin turns black and the rot really sets in.
They don't embalm people for fun, so yes...it's really necessary.

I could view the corpse for as many days as they would allow me to, 'cause I ain't gettin' embalmed for anyone until I'm dead. Plus, I'm gettin' creamated!

Once they embalm you, you won't be able to view a corpse at all.

They don't embalm live people, and when you're dead, you don't see anything
