"Operation Ajax (1953) was a covert operation by the UK and US to remove the nationalist cabinet from power...in order to preserve the Western control of Iran's oil infrastructure.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright... made an apology to the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2000 for the United States' role in the overthrow"

You have Allan and John Foster Dulles to thank for it.
We should never have meddled in their politics in 1954.
The blow back against the Shah was well deserverd and the US was greatly responsible. We WERE a Great Satan then and now as far as Iran is concered. If Iran needs to be safe from the US and Cheney, they NEED to have nuclear weapons.

This ignorance is the result of a lot of things:

- Education - for the most part our education system for some time now has been an abysmal failure. No Child Left Behind is a sham, and for the last few generations, we've developed ill-educated, gullible, and ignorant electorate who spit on the truth for misguided nationalist pride
- Religion - we've allowed religion to infiltrate government. A good portion of the people in this country believe in the Apocalypse and are so convinced that they will be saved, rather give in to an unnecessary conflagration in the Middle East instead of challenging the politicians to change course for the sake of humanity.
- Critical thinking has lost to Anna Nicole smith, OJ, and other trivialities that distract rather than inform. We have the media with their focus group-based programming trying to turn a profit like the entertainment division.

I know I'll get a lot of thumbs down but I don't really give a damn because the ones that vote me down probably couldn't understand a word I wrote anyway.

But I fought for my country, so you can say I protected my own right to speak my mind. I love my country but my country is letting me down time and again.

So to the person who asked this great question, it's not completely our fault that we're collectively ignorant, it has been decades of conditioning that has led to this stupor. I just hope enough of us wake up and take the country back from those that have been sending us on this train wreck. Stay informed and vote!!

Lastly to all you ignorant people who are advocating for a nuclear strike against Iran, do the rest of us a favor and strap yourselves to the ICBMs before they take off, morons!! You really do want to bring an end to this world don't you?

Most of the answers that this question is receiving are very disappointing. I think the true weakness many of the answerer's are suffering from is the lack of seeing the cause and effect relationship that western interference has played in the middle-east. Most people here say that they don't care or it doesn't matter. Well I promise you all that the problems we are facing now could have been prevented.

If France and the UK didn't draw the boarders of Iraq the way they did, the US wouldn't be standing in the middle of a civil conflict today. If the UK and America didn't over throw the democratically elected government of Iran in 53' we wouldn't be faced with a fanatical Islamic state that is working hard for WMD's now. If America didn't write Israel a blank check every year and blindly support it's government, the Palestinians wouldn't be in such a desperate situation.

We can't do much about the past; but we can consider how our actions today can influence tomorrow.

That was how many years ago? I wasn't even alive then and the majority of Iranians weren't either.

The fact that Iran HATES is all I need to know. We could all harbor resentment and ill-will toward others if we choose to focus upon such things in our fathers' and grandfathers' pasts.

Albright's statements - like those that Paul made recently - did nothing other than inflame and justify their current hatred. Such talk serves their purposes ONLY and should not be a part of the current American repertoire.

Today is today and that was yesterday.

Iran hates America because America won't put up with the muslim dream of a bunch of religious savages dominating the world. Operation Ajax or any other spin they want to put on their motives are irrelevant and are not the reasons for their rabid hatred. The muslim nations feel like dwarves next to the civilized countries of the world and terrorism is their only hope of feeling any different about themselves. They should try being civilized for a change and condemning the radicals who are causing all the problems.

The majority of Iranians don't hate us.
They would love to come to the US, just like they did by the hundreds of thousands during the 70's.
(Yes, Albright apologized, surrendered, and "bowed" to all foreign countries. She is a typical Democrat.)

No Americans are not ignorant about it they simply do not care. Which will be their own downfall. If you tell them, the majority, this information they will say so what, nuke em. Which only goes to prove something that I have been saying for a good while now, that the majority of Americans are retarded.
