The notion of "soul mates" has been around a very, very long time.
However, there are several viewpoints as to how to describe "soul mates" ... even on how to spell it! Some people spell the term as a whole word, soulmate and others, including us, prefer to keep it as two words, soul mate.
Soul Mate Descriptions
Reincarnation: Some believe that a soul mate is someone with whom a person has shared other life times through reincarnation.
The soul mate could be a friend, business partner, parent, child, sibling, spouse or other family member. These soul mates can be of the same or opposite sex.
Other Half: Others believe, like the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, that a soul mate is a person's "other half".

For me there is no such thing. It's a nickname given by people to someone they love to mean that they are destined for each other or something like that.

A "soul mate" is a heterosexist and religiously constructed notion to support certain behaviours in society.
I don't believe in such a thing for a minute.
Show me your soul, then we can discuss your "soul" mate.

There are soul mates and cell mates. Everyone has someone in their lives that are either. That person that makes your world complete and everything special even if for a brief moment those are soul mates. Then theres the ones that make your life completely miserable but help you realize the good in yourself and to appreciate the good in others , these ppl you will never forget either. Both help make you the person you are and will be. You must have one to appreciate the other and sadly you usually see this in hindsight. Everyone is in your life for a purpose.

A soulmate is someone you intuitively know you have a connection to. It can be a likemindedness or deep sense of familiarity that draws you together. It exists because of previous shared life experiences. It need not be romantic in nature.
My husband and I each had experiences in childhood related to reconnecting with each other - of there being someone that was missing. We recognized each other instantly, but because we were with other people it took a year before we made contact and immediately determined to marry. Several years later an accidental encounter with a psychic - who described our present relationship in vivid detail - said that we had been together in every past life. Many years later we discovered that immediate past life relationship - which had been a deeply influential working relationship while married to other individuals.
The point being that looking for a soulmate is not relevant, particularly a romantic one. If you have a connection it will happen and there will be an inevitable synchronicity to it. Instead focus on knowing yourself and seeking full aliveness and purpose in this lifetime and you will draw the relationships you need to you.

In my opinion, a soul mate is almost like a version of yourself, you have so much in common with them, similar sense of humor, similar outlook on life. Soul mates make good close friends. And then you have kindred spirits. That is someone who you may have many differences with but you have a deep bond with them and connect on a very strong level, and your differences compliment each other. That's a good romantic pair.

For me a soul mate would be the person created with the idea that I would not want to be lonely, and me that he would not want to be lonely; we would not be too attracted to each other because I don't want to be a mom. My ideal soul mate would be a teacher to me, protector of me, and co-provider but he could be the 'sole provider' also. He would be very religious, as in it would be more important than his relationship with me; my existence would be an added bonus.

There is such a thing, and you only know what it means when you actually find him/her. There is no way to describe it.
