Im going to lay mulch in my garden to kill all the weeds, they say putting down newspaper first is good, what about putting down thick cardboard? would this help stop weeds from coming up?

Great solution. Works beautifully. Just e certain the plants have been watered thoroughly before placing the cardboard and be certain to overlap the edges.
Hope this helps.

Yep! The cardboard will be slippery when you walk on it, so be careful. Actually so is the newspaper. With the newspaper use multiple layers and overlap well. Both will decompose in a season so be prepared to do it again in 6 months or so. There's no concern about the ink in the soil as most inks are soy based. I'd avoid the glossy pages.

Hey, get yourself some of that black plastic for landscaping
and put that right on top of the weeds; then put some bark chips on top. Cut holes through the plastic where you want to plant and you will only have to weed those tiny areas. Also, a great natural way to kill weeds....pour boling water on them. No weed killer needed, then do as I menioned above and cover the area with black plastic, cut the holes where you want to place your plants and cut your weeding time by 95%. BTW: you can use marble chips too and it will look even better. Have fun.

Don't use cardboard.

Do 5 layers newsprint, overlapping and pierce the layers with an ice pick or screwdriver every foot or so for water penetration.

It works best to gently spray the papers as you go from row to row to keep them in place without blowing around.

Avoid the glossy ad pages. You can get more newspapers from most gas stations, as they toss previous days papers. Ask one to save some for you. Be sure to pick them up daily.

Well for a short time yes but eventuelly the card board would rot your best bet is gravel or stones or you could try killing them with vegtable juice or a vineger and lemon home made spray or salt would be good too.
