Some of these answers are just plain wrong. People who don't know shouldn't guess! Liquid nitrogen is not expensive at all. It is an item of commerce widely used in laboratories. And it is not kept in a pressurized container. It is kept in "Dewar" flasks of various sizes. These flasks are basically very efficient thermos bottles. They are vented so as to allow the nitrogen to escape as it vaporizes. To close it off would result in a pressure buildup with possible disastrous consequences.

We had experiments with liquid nitrogen my years in middle school. The teacher brought liquid nitrogen from a college nearby our school. She stored it in this thick silver container. The minute she poured the liquid nitrogen on the floor it evaporated instantly. So you shouldn't worry about it not being all consumed. Nitrogen is an element that usually stays in a gas state. To make it a liquid, it has to be chilled almost to absolute zero. The moment that liquid nitrogen comes into contact with room temperature, it begins to heat up, rapidly. The Fog that you observe is just the liquid nitrogen changing from a liquid to a gas state. This occurs very quickly.

Actually, Liquid Nitrogen is a very cheap and common substance it can be obtained easily by calling up a welding supply house (look in the yellow pages) and ask them for there prices per gallon. The catch is you MUST have a dewar to hold it...These containers range from 80-2,000 dollars. Even so...If you have a thermos drill a hole in the top and take it to your welding supply place, and they will sell it to you for about 3 or 4 dollars gallon. Whoever said it cost 100,00 thousand dollars a liter is a dumbass and no, its not illegal and yes, they will sell to a minor. (tell them your using for a school project)

Warning: Liquid nitrogen is a very dangerous substance! Learning how to handle it on your own can result in loss of limb or life. If you make a mistake with it, there are no do-overs.

If you are trained and have a good reason to use it, you can obtain N2 from a college that does chemical research. You bring the Dewars flask and sign for it.

I doubt any air products company would sell to a minor, or to an uncertified adult. It's dangerous stuff requiring a very high pressure vessel to contain, and mishandling can result in freezing injuries or death.

Praxair is the largest distributor of atmospheric gasses. You might try them thru the store location website below.
