He'll be leaving in 2009 with the largest deficit in US History that our children and grandchildren will have to deal with. Do you think there will be any money left in Social Security for when the baby boomers start to retire?

You should have realized years ago that socialist security was a black hole. If you aren't making other arrangements ... as Bush wanted us to do when he tried to let us invest for our own retirement...then you'll be living of your and my grandchildren

You've got to be kidding me??? Social Security has nothing to do with our National Deficit... And NO their won't be any money left when the baby boomers retire that's because Social Security was and still is a flawed system, it has been from the beginning.

No, although scrapping Social Security has been a pet project of GW Bush for more than 30 years, he doesn't have the "political capital" to dismantle the framework now. He will continue to drain the trust fund to pay for the Iraq war as long as he's in office. Congress and the new president will need to rescue Social Security in 2009 the way they did in the mid 1980's. A few changes here and there; a slight increase in the payroll tax, an increase in the retirement age... a few fixes like those will do the trick.

Social Security has been an issue for years and years. It Will continue to be an issue for years to come. At some point it will either fail or be reformed. If it fails, Bush, Clinton, Bush 1, Reagan, Carter, etc. had plenty of help with their respective Congresses because none of them got the job done. To recap: To the government, social security is not a problem, its an issue.

I'm glad you asked this question. Our government including past Presidents and under the auspicious directions of Congress have used the Social Security program for a slush fund to finance various projects for years. Had it been left alone we would have more than enough resources to care for the needy and aged if combined with fairness and common sense

no. We're going to have a democratic president soon, and they can hopefully help undo the legacy bush left on social security. I mean, over 70% of americans dissaproove of they way hes handling it. im sure someone will continue what FDR started. Soccial security is one of the best policies this country has ever had. especially when veiwed by democrats. No one in their right mind is going to vote for a republican after this mess, so i mean, we'll probably have some republican advisors (who, evept in the case of George Bush II, are very good w/ money.) and probly Obama president, and we'll work it out. But i promise, no democrat in this country is going to let social security die out.

Social Security is over sixty years old. It's defunct. Why do people keep trying to resurrect this monstrous bureaucratic nightmare? And if you insist on imposing a welfare state, at least come up with a better model for old-age pension than the one we have. Bush couldn't have destroyed Social Security because it was doomed from the start.

Ten yrs ago they said SSI would only last another 20 yrs so who knows, maybe the baby boomers should come up with a plan? What does SS have to do with the deficit? If you don't plan today you won't have it tommarow and trust me who can live on SS anyways?

I have been told all my life starting when Carter was President that Social Security would not last long enough for me to ever collect a dime. I doubt that Bush destroyed it. I think who destroyed it was the selfish (baby-boomer) liberals who refused to have enough children to pick up the tax burden of their generation. Those who fight tooth and nail to destroy the tax-payers who will ensure that SS will remain viable through things like abortion.
