Real pearls and cultured pearls are both "real" pearls. Cultured just means that man inserted an organic object into the oyster to stimulate the growth of a pearl. And both will "flake" over time. But if you want to know if you've got a "fake" pearl or a real pearl, put it in vinegar.......one of them will be destroyed.

If you rub real pearls together they feel gritty, fake ones don't. Same if you rub them against your teeth.
