WOW, I got tired from reading the answer from why not. Need to give him a new nickname of "Talks alot and full of hot air" His way is too long and will take up alot of your time and will not work. Why do all that when you can use one program to do it all. He says try this and see what happens. What?? wow. I garanDAMNtee my answers and will even help you personally if need be. Don't listen to rankings either they are just biased. Your problem will not be a problem at all.
Here's what you need to do.
1st, don't waste your time with AVG, spybot, ad aware, CA, spyhunter, superantispyware, avast, panda, kaspersky, windows defender or anything of the sort. Stay away from anything that is FREE when it comes to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they free. They are NOT good.
2nd, You need some of the best software out there. Norton Systemworks is very good. That's the only good software from Norton. I wouldn't recommend Norton Internet security, its not that great. Now the best software you should get is Spysweeper with Anti-virus, this software is too good and gets better everyday. This is elite software. It blocks over 174,500 threats. No other software can compete with that or come close for that matter. It catches everything. I've used them all and it is 2nd to none.
3rd, after you install and update the software, since its in your system you will have to turn off system restore and then go into safe mode and run the scan and eliminate the virus. then after removal, reboot and turn system restore back on.
4th, (Optional) I recommend a Firewall from Zone Alarm, their free version is so good. Or you can buy their Pro version, but the free version will do more than the job.
5th, any probs during or after you do all this, send me an e-mail.

Install Avast home http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Please consider this:

There may be several signs that a computer has a virus infection . It is often difficult to distinguish whether there is an hardware error or a software problem since viruses are written to avoid detection, and to damage your computer.

Some of the common problems caused by computer viruses are:
1. Sudden system crashes and computer reboots automatically.
2. Application software crashes and random messages are displayed on the monitor.

3. Computer becomes very slow

4. Hard disk data gets corrupted and hard disk will not boot

How to fix it:

If there is a problem which could be caused either by a hardware malfunction or a virus , it is advisable to first run an antivirus program. It is cheaper and easier to solve a problem using free antivirus software.

Get a free antivirus program. Some of the free antivirus programs available are:

1. Norton Anti Virus Special Edition 2005 from Symantec in Google Pack. Get essential software with Google Pack. Free updates for a period of six months

2. AVG Anti-virus free edition - change the default email scanning option as it slows the system down

3. Avast - can be installed for 60 days, before you register it for free

Download the anti virus software to your computer hard disk and install the software. Get the latest updates from the companies website.

Run the antivirus software, preferably in safe mode. If any virus is detected, the antivirus software will first try to clean the infected file. If this is not possible, the software will quarantine the file.

To prevent computer virus problems in future

1. Install a firewall to protect your computer when you connect to the internet

2. Do not allow anyone to install software or copy any files to your computer without scanning the software /data with the latest updated anti virus software

3. Never open files with suspicious attachments, especially if they are from strangers. Always request files to be sent as a text attachment.

4. Avoid joining paid to read , adult , file sharing and other illegal websites, the computers of visitors to these websites usually get infected with viruses and spy ware.

Use System Restore, when antivirus and Spyware remover software does not work

Greetings. My name's Sanjay Patel, and I currently hold an honorary Master's degree in the field of Computer Science. I am aware of, and have personal knowledge related to your question. There are computer maintenance businesses which are probably in your area, however they come at the cost of hiring a professional to enter your home. There may also be some local destinations where you can drop off your computer and wait to have a technician look at it. These options can often be costly, and pretty inconvenient. The answer to this question can probably be found doing a little extra research on Google. A well-running computer can be a hard thing to maintain. From my experience, there is but only One software which is reputable- and consistently reliable for healing sick, slow computers. Reimage™ is a world-renown, easy to use software designed by Forensic scientists and made for the average person. This thing will fix literally just about ANY problem you could possibly be having with your PC. Reimage was recommended to me by a Professor during my 2nd year of Graduate school.

AVG free is a horrible anti-virus (their anti-spy-ware IS good). I would suggest Active Virus Shield.

I like Active Virus Shield. A lot. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
Full test chart is here:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82

Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb ram)

Active Virus Shield detects and removes spyware, also.

And it updates up to 15 times a DAY with new virus definitions, 7 days a week!

Good stuff, free for everyone from:

Its a bit late in the day now, but you should have had Norton Internet Security installed on your computer form the start and this problem would not have occurred, this is a very good and effective bit of software not to be under estimated, if you can I would suggest either buying the software from a trusted store or visiting their website to download it to remedy the problem which you are having, their web address is,
http://symantec.com and lets hope they can help you here.
AVG is a free anti virus software which sometimes detects virus's but is unable to remove them, but then what would you expect from something that is free. good luck with this and lets hope that you resolve the problem.

Hi, it sounds like the malware is corrupting the file, either that or you have a bad download link. Either way I've uploaded the AVG 7.5 freeware set up file to the following address:
http://www.orbitfiles.com/download/id1533129340

Once you've downloaded and installed it download any updates and then run the scanner.
cheers

Try downloading Spybot, its free, run a scan and follow intructions, then rebbot your PC and try downloading AVG again.
You can also get ccleaner, its free and easy to use.
You should also get a firewall, try ZoneAlarm, also free.
I know it alot of anti-virus and anti-spy ware, but it better safe then sorry, they are all free and the best in the market (as far as free goes) :)
