Oops! Must be one of those plastic handled cheapo dipsticks.
OK, don't panic. First thing I'd try is needle-nose pliers, if you can see the tip of the dipstick with a flashlight.

Next, most dipstick "tubes" (the thing the dipstick goes into) are either force fitted into the engine block or are held inside the engine block by a small bolt. Either way, it is possible to pull the dipstick tube out of the engine blockand this would expose the remains of the dipstick.

Most oil dipsticks are long enough so that they nearly touch the bottom of the oil pan and would not get inside of the engine and bugger things up as they will simply fall an inch or two until they hit the bottom of the oil pan and then just sit there until you pull it out.

Good luck!

Usually those plastic handled dipsticks leave plastic at the tip of the metal stick, when u try to grab them they go further down the tube if that is the case then the entire tube will have to come out and stick removed from the bottom, if it broke in another manner where u can see metal or grab it then try other methods meantioned needle nose pliers, magnets.
hope this helps .

u can buy a tool that looks like a pencil. it has a magnet on the end and it telescopes. it should fit into the oil tube. the other option if it doesnt fit is to buy a dowel that will fit into the opening and cut a thin groove in the end about 3/4 of an inch long such that when u insert the dowel into the oil tube, the split will go over the end of the dipstick and "grab" it for you. btw. go to junkyard for new oil stick. save soem bucks

If you can see it, needle nose pliers.
If you can not see it, the dipstick tube needs to be removed.
