The motherboard is the large circuit board that pretty much everything else in the computer plugs into. You should be able to see something that looks like a watch battery if you look around on it.

I presume you are getting a cmos battery low warning message when you are starting your machine.
I could go on and describe like the other but the best thing for you to do is use Yahoo search, choose images, and search for motherboard and then cmos.. maybe even together.
This will bring up lots of pictures of motherboards (which all basically look the same) and a few different types of cmos battery (which can look different depending on the age of your system)
You will also need to open your computer case this can vary depending on the make of pc, some like Dell have simple catches that allows the top or side slip off (regarding desktop or tower).... and just to confuse you a little more some of the older computers will have a couple of screws to undo to slip the cover off backwards.. and some will need the front face unclipped so you can slip the cover off forwards... you can usually work out which you have with a little looking and gentle tugging... you could even look at your manufacturers website, under support.
when you take it out it will wipe settings from your computers basic setup... now this is where a modern computer is a bonus as these computers will redetect your hard ware as part of the boot process and will usually prompt you to enter the bios setup to set the time.. if you have the older type you may have to follow instructions.. even older you will need a little know how... so you have been warned.
Good luck matey..
ps:remeber if you have a newish system and you get this message you may invalidate any warrenty that would cover such and early failure by opending the cover.. so have a check.
pps: when working inside avoid touching anything else as static will damage, you may not even realise that you are charged. best thing is to leave the unit plugged in but make sure you switch the power OFF at the wall. this allows you to touch the case to ground your self whilst making sure theres is no power in there to damage you or your computer.

First I must ask why you are wanting to change the battery. Why are you wanting to change the battery? If you look at the front of your PC tower remove the left cover. This will allow you to see inside of the case. Be sure that the PC is unplugged first. With the left side off you will be able to see the motherboard. It is on the right panel of the case it can be about 11" x 11" or about 9" x 13". Motherboards are usually green or red in color. If you are wanting to change the battery on this board look for the round silver object that is the battery.
Before doing this please let us know what problems you are having with your PC that leads you to think of changing the battery. If your machine is dead it is more than likely your Power Supply Unit has died on you and not the battery.
Please email me if you have questions...

First of all you need to remove the cover from your pc case to do this you have to remove the screws at the rear of the case usually two screws each side depending on the case.
On most cases you can remove each side individually .
When you have removed the cover place the motherboard sideways on a table or bench and look at the motherboard
You will see a small silver battery remove it by gentle prizing the clip open . replace it and put the cover back on and thats that

The term motherboard is understood like this.
Everything plugs into it the mother board external cards are often referred to as Daughter boards.
If you need to change your CMOS battery which sounds the case this is usually a button battery called so as it looks like a silver button.
Change the battery with the mains lead disconnected and do it quickly. Be prepared the PC may loss it's own memory requiring BIOS settings including date/time Hard disk type ect to be reentered into the PC's memory (BIOS)
goodluck

on you're mother board is a round silver battery just be careful how you remove it, there is a small clip that holds it in position
by the way pull out the mains cable before you touch anything inside the case,

It's the big circuit board that *everything* else is plugged into.
Follow the ribbon cable from the back of your CD or hard disk... it ends up at the motherboard.
