I hit my pinkie toe 7 days ago, bending it away from the foot. When I hit it I heard a crack. It didn't turn black and blue, but now the joint is swollen and it hurts pretty badly when I bend it. Does anyone know what's wrong with it? I would've gone to a doctor, but I was told they don't do anything for toes.
Thank you in advance!

While it never hurts to be x-rayed, it is true, that usually the treatment for a toe can be done at home. The exceptions are if the toe is dislocated or if it has multiple misaligned fractures. If it is dislocated, it needs to be put back into place. If misaligned due to multiple fractures, it needs to be pinned (extremely rare).

If you know your toe was not dislocated, you can treat it just as we would if you came into the E.R. It will relieve your pain and help it heal faster. However, if you think it might have been dislocated, you should definitely see a doctor and be xrayed.

For treatment: cut a strip of gauze and place it between your little toe and the 4th toe as a cushion to prevent rubbing. Gently tape the two toes together. Do not tape too tight or you will impede circulation! This provides support for the little toe as it heals and also lessens the pain. Whenever you are relaxing, prop your foot up higher than your heart. Take a NSAID (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug) for pain such as ibuprofen. It takes up to 6 weeks for a toe bone to heal. If your pain continues past 6 weeks, it is essential to see a doctor in case there was additional injury to your toe.

Remember though, it never hurts to see the doctor to find out if you broke it, sprained it or dislocated it!
