If the setting, plot or actions in any way reflect on a real school, and are not what a reasonable person would assume to be derogatory, inflammatory or slanderous, you may use a real name. "Sam Spade walked past South High School on Limestone and Liberty Streets, and turned right....." is an acceptable answer.
If Buffy Slayer is going to meet up with Gorgon Hellcatcher in the halls, the school must be a made-up name like Jefferson High or Washington Elementary.
If the Breakfast Clubbies were spending a weekend there, it must be made up. Lindburgh University or Franklin Junior High.
If the staff- Mr. Ironeyes, Ms. Knowitall, and Mrs. Catchya--are in a seedy, grafiti-marked school in Hell's Kitchen, it needs to be a made up name like Heights Elementary, Hilltop High or Riverbend School.
Hope that helped.
