I am the owner of a less-than-year old hp laptop. It's terribly slow and sometimes crashes. My guess is that it has some virus... any other suggestions?

run adware, run virus scan, defragment the hard drive, delete any unused programs (go to add and remove programs in the control panel).

this next thing is a little complex but will make your computer a lot faster during startup. go to "run..." in the start menu, type in msconfig
a window should pop up, on the top, go to the "start up" tab. there is a list of all the programs that your computer opens during start up. some are need to be left checked, like virus scan and some others. but a lot of them will be junk, so disable them. try disabling some of the ones that look unimportant and restart your computer. next time windows starts up it will have a window pop up, select the check that says "do not show next time" and click okay.

if computer functions good without these programs then its fine. it it doesnt, go back to msconfig and re-enable them

if everything fails, format the hard drive, it will also delete all your programs and will put your computer in the same condition it was in when you first bought it

If you download music it can cause the computer to slow down. try doing some windows updates and download spybot search and destroy. Its free and it will help remove any virus, trojan horse, worm, logic bomb, or whatever you may have. also download zone alarm. it is a free firewall that helps you track who and what tries to connect to your computer. You cannot stop every thing but these steps will help to keep your computer from crashing. Good Luck

You probalby have alot of malware and red flag software (AOell, limewire, banzai buddy, weatherug, bearshare). Uninstall the junk. This is a software issue, this is NOT bad hardware. Make sure youre not using more than one antivirus. Clean up your start up. Run antivirus and antispyware

best thing to do is,

burn all your important files to a CD, or better yet, transfer them all to a flash drive.

then, format your hard drive.

and reinstall your OS.

that should solve it.
