I love hanging out in the basement because it's so cool in the summer. I am thinking of finishing it and wondering that if I put up sheetrock, will it keep the cool air out (so to speak). I know that it will help keep it warm in the winter but I want it to retain it's natural cool in the summer. So basically, I want the best of both worlds. But I'm afraid sheet rocking and insulating it will block out the cool air that seems to come from the granite foundation that sits mostly underground. Anybody have any knowledge or experience with this? Thanks so much! =)

You are still in luck. Actually, even better because what cool air that is in the basement will stay there. In the winter you will feel drier air but still cooler than the rest of the house. Naturally because you are underground it will be cooler. The key thing when you insulate is to make sure that there is a vapor barrier to the heating side.

Mike1942 is right on the money. Your basement will remain cool but not as cool as it is now. The sheetrock and insulation will retain the heat that has been escaping through the walls now. You'll love it in the winter but may not be as happy in the summer. Note: The energy and cost savings in the winter may just overshadow the slightly warmer temps. in the summer.

Yes. The basement is losing heat to the ground through the walls and rock and gaining heat from your body and through the floor of the house. If you sheetrock over insulation it will lose less heat through the walls while still gaining from the house. If will probably be cooler than the rest of the house, but less cool than it is now.

Yes, insulation stops the transfer of heat or coolness from one area to another. Here is an example. If you have a glass of ice water it feels cold to your hands. If you put that same ice water in an insulated mug you will not feel the cold.
