If memory serves (and it doesn't always) that actually means "no fault found." That only means that the emissions system is working normally.

The low power and plumes of white smoke tell me that your engine has either a major compression fault or one or more failed injectors. White smoke in a diesel engine generally indicates that unburned diesel fuel is leaving the engine through the exhaust. Since diesel engines depend upon the heat of compression for ignition that tells me that the compression is possibly VERY low on one or more cylinders. It's also very possible that an injector has failed and the fuel is not being properly atomized when it is injected into the cylinder.

You'll need the services of a qualified diesel engineer to properly diagnose the root cause. The engine's compression needs to be tested as do the injectors.

Swapping injectors is NOT a DIY proposition. Even a spec of airborne dust can destroy a new injector if it gets inside the injector. Ditto for a microscopic drop of water. Improper bleeding of the fuel lines can also quickly destroy an injector. Injectors typically run from about £75 - £250 per so you don't want to muck about with them.

Testing of injectors requires expensive testing equipment and specialised knowledge -- again not the forte of the DIY'er.

Hi

White smoke from a diesel engine means that there is air in the fuel system or a lack of injected fuel, not unburnt fuel leaving the exhaust. BLACK or BLUE smoke signifies unburnt fuel or oil, and GREY smoke signifies coolant.

Check under the bonnet for fuel leaks because this would explain the white smoke and the smell.

Let us know what you find and we'll throw some more ideas at you.

Cheers
