Yes, I think the house is haunted. No, I would never live there. The story? I'm sure some of it is true.
Not long after the book came out and the movie came out, we were out that way. We drove to the Amityville Horror house. At the time, it was not lived in. My husband wanted to get out and go walk around it. I got out of the car and just felt a weird presence and wouldn't go near it.
We took pictures of it, but I didn't want to chance running into anything evil. I just felt goosebumps all over.
Any house that 6 people were murdered in, I would never want to live in. Maybe the whole story of Amityville wasn't true. But, just knowing all those people were murdered in there, I couldn't stand the thought of it. There's got to be evil lurking in the house.
They remodeled it and say the people living there now swear it's not haunted. I truly believe that some people are more affected than others. IF you don't believe in ghosts and hauntings, it won't bother you. But, if you are a believer, you will notice that there is something wrong.
Call me crazy, but everytime that I've bought a house, I ask if anyone has ever died here. Dying in a house is bad enough, but being murdered is a totally different story. I would never live in a house where just one person was murdered, but 6 people, NEVER.

The "haunting" has been proven to be a hoax time and time again.
There were some nasty murders in there, and the murderer's lawyer came up with the demonic possession to get his client off as a crazy person.
The buyers of the house latched onto the story as a way of getting out from under a large mortgage.
