Cotton and tobacco were both used, but were not very successful, they just bounced off things, so everyone started
using bullets.

Cotton and tobacco both brought in money to the South but it was hard to get past the Union blockade. Cotton was grown more widely than tobacco and needed more slaves.

The South was distinctive for its production of tobacco, which earned premium prices from around the world. Most farmers grew a little for their own use or traded with neighbors who grew it. It was the main cash crop in North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky and Maryland. Pennsylvania and Delaware also grew Tobacco but to a lesser extent.

I was about to say tobacco, since cotton hadn't been introduced at the time of the civil war. Then I realised (realized) the question referred to the US civil war and not England's civil war. I suspect it was cotton but can't support my answer.

Tobacco was exchanged by the Confederate soldiers as trade goods to the Union troops in exchange for coffee. In a sense tobacco was used by the soldiers more in this manner than cotton.

Funny, cufty....actually, cotton was widely used for clothing, tents, and all sorts of cloth items. Tobacco was just, well, tobacco.
